Porter Robinson & Madeon's SHELTER
This has absolutely nothing to do with album covers but while searching for a visually compelling cover to post about, I rediscovered this work of art:
This is the music video for Porter Robinson & Madeon's SHELTER. First of all, the song is such a bop. It has a catchy melody and flow and the lyrics really hit you hard in the feels. A little snippet from it:
But what really makes the song complete is the stunning music video that went with it. Robinson flew all the way to Japan to work with one of the premier animation studios, A-1 Pictures, to bring his vision to life. In the video, a 17 year old girl, Rin, wanders around a futuristic, simulated world she creates and draws to life with a tablet. The animation in these worlds is actually breath taking. Like the colors, the dimensions, the details they put into making these scenes is extraordinary. Everything looks so real but you know it's simply an animation on a screen. The way they animate the worlds coming to life really draws you in and you feel like you're in there with her.
The vastness of everything also gives you the same feeling of loneliness Rin is probably also feeling. since she's all by herself. She does this every single day, making new worlds to explore by herself, until one day the tablet malfunctions and creates a world she did not make. The world is her old hometown and she watches as a younger, 10 year old version of herself happily plays with a man who we later find out was her father. Through flashbacks of news reports, Rin learns that a moon sized planetary body is hurling towards Earth and is expected to make contact and destroy the planet. Rin's father dedicates their last days trying to make Rin happy while creating a space pod that is able to keep her alive in a coma state and somehow erase all her memories of her life on Earth. The colors of the scenes turns from vibrant to dull and the saturation also dies down. This shift in colors really contributes to the shift in emotions we as the watcher experiences.
What happens in the end, you'll have to watch the video to find out. But I highly highly HIGHLY recommend both the song and the video. The two paired together, especially with the lyrics, really create a lasting impact on you. I kid you not, I sobbed like a baby when I first watched it.

I could never find the right way to tell you
Have you noticed I've been gone?
'Cause I left behind the home that you made me
But I will carry it along
And it's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Until you're gone
