Virtual Reality Art

Virtual reality is an emerging technology that is slowly becoming more mainstream. While typically thought of in a video games context (which could be considered a form of art), I wonder if artists will embrace the technology as a new platform for art projects as it becomes more mainstream.
One could argue that creating art in a virtual environment could be a sort of "cop out" from making 3-dimensional art in real life, but in my view it could foster the creation of art that wouldn't be possible due to the physical constraints of the planet.
Virtual worlds? Virtual art museums? The possibilities seem endless....
