Characters without Cannon Colors: Jojo since the 80s

One of the many, many interesting design points in Araki's animated series Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is the lack of cannon colors for characters. During moments of extremity in the series, character colors are inverted and swapped. Although characters have a base color scheme, it's so odd to see a black haired character suddenly have purple or green hair during episode climaxes. I think these extreme color inversions are done to convey how the character's extreme emotions changes their outward behavior, but this is really just speculation. Here are some examples:

Jojo is by far one of the most influential anime since it's beginning as a manga in 1987. Here's a pic of some of the older art compared to the modern animation adaptation:

This particular series has been such a journey to follow. The manga from 1987 is still being written, and the animation is currently being produced and released on a one episode per week basis on Fridays. While the drawings themselves are great, the opening songs are probably just as awesome. Here's my favorite:

It's really interesting how readers associate so much of the characters' personalities to their physical attributes. I wonder what the color changing was for, and how that can convey a different meaning towards readings. :)
