Jennet Liaw

Typography has always been a hobby of mine ever since the days when everyone used to draw the letter "S" using six vertical lines. Yeah, you all know what I mean.

I love it because it allows for the emotions and the overall meaning of the message to be portrayed in words but it acts as an image. Good type is attention grabbing, visually pleasing, but still impactful and strong. Personally, dabbling in typography has helped me to train my eye to process how things are spaced and laid out on the page, how to recognize good and bad fonts, and how to get a simple message across in a way that's eye catching.

One of my favorite designers, Jennet Liaw, does this extremely well. She was born and raised in the bay area but has since moved to NYC to work as a freelance designer. Before this, she worked as a designer for Nike, creating the images and logo variations you saw on shirts and other products made by the company. As a freelancer, her recent public work has consisted mainly of murals that she's done for multiple companies around New York, all of which are presented in a typographical manner.

Absolutely in love with the orange/green/white combo she used here. The area she painted this on is just straight up grey walls so you can image how this piece really pops and brings some vibrancy. Also the type she chose, not sure if she just pulled it out of thin air or if she based it off something, but I think the hand lettered script she used definitely fits the mood better than a stiff sans serif.

Even though there are a lot of colors here, they don't clash with each other. I loved how she was able to make pastel colors so vibrant and how she spaced out the speech bubbles on the canvas. She also incorporated some smaller images within the mural using the color red to make them stand out and advance in space.

This is an example of a mural she painted using a more structured sans serif instead of a script. I think the contrast between the type choice and the painted images of leaves surrounding it help the text to stand out.

This is a mural design she made for International Women's Day. I'm not sure if this was ever actually put up anywhere but either way, I decided to post it since it's a great example of how sometimes, less is more. She stuck with an achromatic palette and one type face but the dimensions and depth in this is awesome.

Jennet Liaw also posts on her Instagram (@jennetliaw) every now and again, mostly images of pages from her sketchbook or commissioned pieces she had to do. Here are some of my favorites:

If you have time, I strongly recommend checking out the rest of her work. She posts most of it on her Instagram. I use it a lot as inspiration so I hope this helps you find some as well!
