The Birmingham Project
For context Dawoud Bey's project is about the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, a church that had previously been the HQ of Martin Luther King Junior's anti-segregationist marches. In a series of photo's Bey used members of the current church community, using children on the right that were the same age as the children that had passed away and the adults on the left were the age that they wouldve been had they survived. This work is emotional and tries to depict what couldve been.
Very powerful, compelling work.
