Artisit Spotlight: Rocio Montoya

I really wish I found her a few weeks ago when we were still doing the animation project but regardless, I'm still glad I found her work cause it's absolutely beautiful. Rocio Montoya specializes in collage work using photos that she took herself. Her interest first started when her father gave her her first camera but after some time, she stopped taking photos. A few years after that point, Montoya revisited her photos and turned them into collages, giving them another dimension and meaning.

She said her work represents her love of surrealism and is a personal tribute to women and nature. Her favorite piece of work so far is called Letargo and it explores this very concept. I'm seriously so blown away by her choices of color and the texture she brings to each piece with just simple, cut up photos. I'm a sucker for muted, unsaturated tones so these collages are right up my alley. They kind of remind me of a calmer, more peaceful version of a Dada collage, minus the political satire. These pieces are almost like sculptures with the way the woman's body is bent and held. And the places where she places the leaves make her look like she's becoming apart of the plant.
