Cauleen Smith

Cauleen Smith's Nov. 7 lecture at the ICA was so packed that I had to sit on the floor in the back of the lecture hall. Smith is primarily a film artist, making films that mainly present social issues and unique perspectives. Though she is famous for these works, I really enjoyed seeing her sketches, sculptures, and banner pieces that echoed similar themes. I could tell immediately that Smith’s style was incredibly thoughtful and pensive, as her work is so interdisciplinary and comprehensive, each including a number of concepts and themes. I loved listening to her discussion of her drastically different inspirations, ranging from early American Shaker communities, to artist Paul Thek, artist and filmmaker Nam June Paik, vocalist Alice Cultrane, to activist Rebecca Cox Jackson. I highly recommend checking out her website!
