got yelled at for admiring art

This Friday, I went to the Barnes Foundation College night and had quite the experience. Upon looking at the framed painting hanging in the walls of the Barnes art collection, security guards constantly yelled at me for getting to close to the art. I understand museum etiquette. I understand I need to be respectful of the art and the space the art is in...

but to be scolded at for leaning into the art to admire the strokes of paint and detail... I felt as if the joy of admiring art was taken away.

I was talking to my friend about this and it is interesting how some art is praised so highly that it disconnects itself from the viewer. The only meaning and purpose of the art is to just hang there as people awe not at the art itself but rather the fame of the art.

I'm all for appreciating the value of art and showcasing it, but I think it is interesting that we are limited in how we interact with the art when it is framed between a dollar sign and 10 zeros.
