John Galliano FW 2009
In the spirit of Halloween (even though it's sadly over), I'm sharing my all time favorite runway show, which is John Galliano's Fall Winter 2009 Ready-to-Wear Collection. Looking through these fashion/beauty looks never gets old because they're so dramatic and almost costume-like. On a visual level, what he does with the different textures (the sheer gauzy fabrics, the metallic jewelry, the pearly, sparkling makeup) works beautifully together to create eerily ethereal beings. What I love about shows like this is because designers draw inspiration from so many time periods and cultures, there's a sense of mystery and fantasy in being transported to a space of ambiguous temporality and geography. I can only imagine what it would've been like to actually be in attendance at this show!!

Here's a video of the show (notice how the music / set design also completes the effect he's going for! It's interesting to think about the role of music in fashion shows or other performances in comparison to how we used music in animated art)
Here's a short video that's more about the behind-the-scenes of the show, including Galliano explaining his vision (if you're interested)
